Wigan too strong for battling Hull outfit

Academy Under 19 League Season Spilt – Group One – Round Nine – Saturday 15th August – Wigan 50 Hull 16

Hull FC’s U19 side suffered back to back defeats for the first team this season, losing heavily to league leaders Wigan for the third time this season.

Topping the league thanks to their eight year reign as an outstanding rated academy, the Warriors were too slick and too clinical for a below full strength Hull side missing several key players.

Unlike the closely fought encounter at YPI last month Hull couldn’t match their hosts this time out, as a Jake Shorrocks kick through was pounced on by Wigan prop Kieran Sherratt for the opening try. Harry Tyson-Wilson then replied for the Black and Whites, but further scores for Gildart, Lawrence and Fell ensured the Warriors took a 22-6 lead into the break.

Lewis Forsyth kicked off the second forty, before in-form hooker Jez Litten barged his way over. Four answered tries then turned the result sour for Hull, with Wigan running away with the match thanks to some precise, glossy and ruthless rugby league football.

Interchange nine Josh Ganson went over, before impressive fullback Gabriel Fell completed his brace. A superb solo effort for Jack Higginson then continued the onslaught, as Wigan’s brutality continued with Callum Field breaking the line to go over from twenty metres out.

Hull got a consolation try through Josh Poskitt from a Wigan fumble, with Tyson-Wilson adding the extras.

Facing Castleford at Bishop Burton next week Hull will get an immediate chance for a quick response, with player of the season Reece Dean expected to return from an ankle injury – ahead of the upcoming top four play-off.
