Regarded by many as the toughest and most intense match on the calendar, the Hull Derby between bitter rivals Hull FC and Hull Kingston Rovers has been playing for 123 years.
The rivalry is spilt via the River Hull following Rovers’ decision to head East after Hull beat them to purchase the Boulevard ground. The Airlie Birds were proudly one of 22 foundation clubs of the Northern Union breakaway in 1895, with Rovers sticking behind to play rugby union – they’ve never made wise choices. Eventually they caught up to reignite the rivalry, and the first official “rugby league” Hull Derby was played in 1899. They won it 8-2.
Today the fixture is still as full blooded and as fiercely competitive as ever. There have been 238 meetings between the old foes. Hull FC hold the all-time bragging rights.

Hull Derby Streaks
- Connect Four: Hull FC became the first club to reach four Hull Derby victories in a row in the Super League era. The Black and Whites extended that to seven consecutive wins from the 2015 Magic Weekend to the 2018 Magic Weekend, with the Airlie Birds going unbeaten in a Derby for over a thousand days.
- Dirty Dozen: Hull FC won an impressive 12 consecutive Hull Derby matches from March 1956 to February 1961, going unbeaten against Rovers for nearly five years. They then lost the next ten Derby matches from April 1961 to October 1964. Weird.
