After Saturday the Hull FC doom and gloom boys were out in full force and predicting the turning off of our life support systems. I had some thoughts about how poor the performance was, would there be a reaction, you bet there was.
Here are my player reviews from the stuffing of Catalans.
Full Back: Jamie Shaul – The baby-faced assassin has this knack of being in the right place at the right time, as was so evident when scoring his try, a sign of a class player. All round performance, he followed the play makers and linked very well.
Right Wing: Ratu Naulago – Get this man signed up long term please. Pace, power and some crunching tackles. A genuine question is there anyone safer under the high ball? Super support to take Connor’s pass and then that ball strip, this guy excites when he gets the ball, you can feel the anticipation rise in the stands.
Right Centre: Jack Connor – Fantastic pick up for the first try and that tackle in the second half to stop one. This man is phenomenal. He doesn’t know his own ability, although I am told he talks a good game. Interceptions at vital times and realised he had “Ratty” next to him with his speed to race away. His special awareness defines logic.
Left Centre: Josh Griffin – Does the unspectacular every week for me. Great post contact meters again, and showed defensively that he is class when on form. Haters will hate but he’s the man for me.
Left Wing: Bureta Faraimo – Positional play gives me nightmares, he has this tendency to come inside and try and cut off the plays far too often, and we were caught out twice. Some good carries and generally attacking wise he’s first class. Unlucky to go into touch after one particular great carry.
Half Back: Albert Kelly – Outstanding contribution from Albert who puts his body on the line every time, some of his hits are sensational. The obligatory try, self-made again, but his all-round contribution was first class.
Half Back: Mark Sneyd – When he is good he’s good. No hiding place for opposition players when he has the ball as he’s always involved. His game management was unbelievable. Nine conversions and a drop goal….. He’s coming Gary Pearce. The record books will say he’s a fantastic kicker, I say he’s more than that, he dictates and controls. Sky pundits think Jake Trueman is the best tactical kicker in the game, well I know who I would rather have.
Prop: Mickey Paea – If this is what he is going to offer us week in week out I would give him another year, maybe add in performance based incentives, but this was the Mickey we love. Barnstorming prop, at his best at the moment, complimenting everything we do. Took so much out of the Catalan forwards.
Hooker: Danny Houghton: Mint was Mint, the middle was so tight, he scooted, he distributed and he controlled. We are so much better with a recognised hooker. They ran at him all night, he repelled them all night.
Prop: Chris Green – Green came back after his injury in fine form, it dipped for me last week (as did everyones), but he was back to his best against a very physical park. His hit ups constantly turned Catalans around and he put in a good stint defensively.
Back Row: Sika Manu – Thank goodness I was in the stands last night he was a monster, took on and controlled the edge. When you need power and grit this is my choice. Sit down Tomkins I think I said it more than once. When he hits it must hurt…
Back Row: Mark Minichello – This was Mark’s best game of the season for me. He was very sound defensively and he took on the forwards all evening. The Italian Stallion still has the desire, still the will to win and he loves a battle.
Loose Forward: Joe Westerman – A surprise call after been left out of the squad I thought Westy helped in no small measures to control the middle. He isn’t everyone’s favourite, but he’s very solid for me and has some flair in his game too. Took the ball in well and tried to get us moving forward.
From the Interchange:
Prop: Josh Bowden – Welcome back Josh we have missed you. This is what you get from an out and out middle, he was given the number 10 jersey because he deserves it. Only his second outing after a full year out, he did good minutes and produced a very good all round display.
Prop: Andre Savelio – A shoe in for a starting position with the new signing Jones next year for me, after a long time out over the last couple of years he gave glimpses of what we can expect, I for one am excited.
Back Row: Dean Hadley – Was not given long to make an impact, but just after coming on, and straight in front of me in the East stand, he made a full set of consecutive tackles and really helped to keep a tiring pack together.
Prop: Brad Fash – Solid if not spectacular, a cameo coming on late in the second half but whilst on he contributed and almost broke away after one particular drive.
Its easy to write reviews of players when they play well, to be constructive and factual when everyone plays well sounds like brown nosing but it’s just my opinion. I may watch through rose coloured glasses, but let’s be honest this is my team, I have followed them now for 50 years. I have seen the good, the bad and the downright ugly. Roller-coasters are meant for riding, and this fan is loving the journey, frustrations aside who would be a coach? Feel for Radders on that front!
