Hull FC Player Reviews: Leeds at Magic

Hull FC’s 2021 season continued to fizzle out with another frustrating defeat as Leeds won 25-24 at the Magic Weekend.

Here are Up the Cream’s individual player reviews.

Starting XIII

Full Back: Jamie Shaul – First start in over a year. Safe at the back for the majority of the game, but he wasn’t a threat in attack. Injury or no injury, how long have we said that for? That’s why Jake Connor is the fullback. Shaul is better defensively, but 21-try assists closes the case.

Right Wing: Bureta Faraimo – Imagine getting criticism for a quick play of the ball. Speechless. Utterly speechless.

Right Centre: Carlos Tuimavave – On hand to score Hull’s second and had another chalked off for offside. Usual self. Runs well. Defends well. Consistently brilliant in a poor side.

Left Centre: Cameron Scott – Been impressed with the ‘young gun’ recently. Defensively wasn’t great but he was alright with the ball. He’s took some harsh criticism this year but there’s something there.

Left Wing: Mahe Fonua – Ran strong and dealt with all kicks thrown at him as well. Could have done more to prevent some of Leeds’ tries though.

Half Back: Jake Connor – Hull’s best as he has been all season. One try. Set another one up. Always the most creative Hull player on the park. He’s outstanding and the scary thing is he will only continue to get better.

Half Back: Marc Sneyd – Kicking was good in parts but not doing enough with ball in hand. Defensively not good enough either. Martin’s try from a Hull point of view was embarrassing.

Prop: Ligi Sao – Effort and energy never in question and he really took it to Leeds again. Discipline does let him down though.

Hooker: Danny Houghton – He was full of effort as usual, but he’s got to get to the ruck for the POTB or at least dive on the soddin’ ball. That play lost Hull the game. It’s not the first time it’s happened either and it sums a lot of things up.

Prop: Chris Satae – The big fella was great early on but ultimately Hull asked too much of him as the game wore on.

Right Back Row: Andre Savelio – Denied a try by the video ref which was controversial to say the least. In fact, it was utter bullshit and not for the first time this season.

Left Back Row: Manu Ma’u – Won’t be happy with his defensive contributions for the Martin and Newman tries. He’s much better than that. Ran strong though.

Loose Forward: Jordan Johnstone – Effort not in question. Actually came up with one or two nice touches as well. Clearly there to get more mileage into the ball.

Interchange

Prop: Josh Bowden – Struggles for continuity in appearances these days and it shows. A shadow of his former self.

Prop: Brad Fash – Went well as he has all season. Made a couple of breaks but they were criminally lacking support.

Left Centre: Connor Wynne – Thrown onto the field after 67-68 minutes.

Ben McNamara – Never made it on. The fifth player that’s happened to this year.
