Hull FC Player Reviews: Castleford in Cup

Hull FC looked much more like their old self with a 29-16 victory over Castleford in the Challenge Cup.

Here are Up the Cream’s individual player reviews – courteously provided by the old man.

Starting XIII:

Fullback: Jamie Shaul – Slim Shady performed a superb break and offload for King Carlos’ first try. However, he is still prone to the odd dropped ball and he took a head knock which ruled him out of the second half.

Right Wing: Ratu Naulago – Showed fantastic pace again to leave everyone in his wake for that 20m tap try. Rugby Union doesn’t deserve him.

Right Centre: Carlos Tuimavave – Coming off the back of a new contract Carlos was sensational. Two tries, a hand in another, and a performance full of class. The King.

Left Centre: Josh Griffin – The meters Griff makes after contact are just phenomenal. Moved to fullback after half time and produced a very solid display. He’s been one of Hull’s best again this season.

Left Wing: Bureta Faraimo – Such a handful, great quick thinking put Ratu away and he was a constant threat. Should have been allowed to complete that breakaway in the first half.

Stand-Off: Albert Kelly – What are Hull going to do without this pocket battleship. Strong all game he constantly poked his nose through the line and gave us so much momentum. Sadly looked to have pulled his hamstring late on.

Half Back: Jake Connor – The effort is there for all to see, Connor is really trying and this was much more assured. Faultless with the tee too, maybe the tide is turning.

Prop: Gareth Ellis – The old warhorse is a rock. The cornerstone of our pack. Even at his grand old age he set a few of Cas’ youngsters in check. You never lose it do you…

Hooker: Jordan Johnstone – Copped a bang and returned with a bandaged head late on. Shame as he’s impressed a lot of people lately.

Prop: Brad Fash – The little prop is the epitome of a young lion. His heart cannot ever be questioned, and backing up from Thursday with that display was immense. Needs to be appreciated more.

Right Back Row: Manu Ma’u – Solid if not spectacular. Still scares the shit out of everyone like…

Left Back Row: Jordan Lane – The Lane Train has really stood up after the restart. He has been outstanding. Put your feet up young man. You deserve to.

Loose Forward: Joe Cator – This lad plays like he has a permanent electricity supply. Another classy display and fast becoming a cult hero.

Interchange:

Prop: Chris Satae – Couple of really potent carries and arguably swung the game in Hull’s favour, but then like many took a knock.

Prop: Ligi Sao – The big guy packs a punch and made some very valuable meters. He is not offloading quite as often as previous games but he didn’t waste the ball either.

Hooker: Danny Houghton – Came on earlier than expected and had his best game for some time. Good scoots and offloads. Competition is doing him some good. That was the Danny Houghton we all know and love.

Centre/Wing: Mahe Fonua – Still worry every time he gets the ball, there is a mistake in there, but a much-improved performance. The cobwebs are going slowly but surely.
