Houghton wants to be Hull FC captain

Hull FC legend Danny Houghton is craving the clubs captaincy for himself, after Gareth Ellis’ retirement has left a vacancy for the role.

Lee Radford and his coaching staff will appoint a new skip for the Black and Whites in 2018, with Houghton, who has been understudy to Ellis over the past few years, showing a desire for the role.

The Hull-born hooker leads by example every week, he grafts his arse off for the club and shows the same level of professionalism both on and off the field. He’s arguably the most natural choice, and will do everything in his power to convince Radford that that’s the case.

“Hopefully I can tie Radford’s hands behind his back and he’ll give it to me,” Houghton told League Express.

“If I get the nod I’ll be a proud man and I’ll be honoured to represent my club as the captain. It’s something as a kid you could never dream of doing, but hopefully I can do it and lead the team out in some more finals.

“I’ve not really spoken to Lee. We’ve not spoken about the captaincy, either individually or collectively, but it’s inevitable that’s it’s going to come and I’m sure we will speak in the next week or two.”

Hull FC are hoping to go one better next year after narrowly missing out on a place at Old Trafford in the past two seasons, and Houghton believes the squad aren’t far away to taking the next step.

“We said we’d learn from 2016 for 2017 and I think we did a little,” he continued. Hopefully we can learn from 2017 going into 2018 and put ourselves in a better position.

“We don’t want to get too carried away on what we need and what we don’t. We’ll ensure the early part of our season is good to give us a chance of making the four.

“In the last two seasons we came up short but we know we can do better. We just want to give ourselves an edge to get us over that line.”

Sounds like a home Super League semi-final is on the agenda then.
