Derby heartache for Hull as Rovers ease to victory

Super League Round Eight – Friday 02nd April – Hull 6 Rovers 20 – KC Stadium

It was a big difference in emotions felt to the previous Derby nillin’ of last year as Hull KR climbed to fourth position in the Super League table with a well-deserved and pretty comfortable victory over Hull at the KC Stadium.

Despite all the home sides field position and thus opportunities they couldn’t penetrate a Rovers defence – and by such a fatality looked anything but the ordinary. Hull were poor, as each pivot seemed to meet a mental breakdown when entering the opposition red zone. It was a sorry state of affairs, and probably the worst occasion to put in such a performance.

Rovers though made us of their limited chances and it was the ‘dinner jacket man’ (quivers) – Terry Campese – who gave the Robins the perfect start – getting on the end of a Shaun Lunt pass following a Dixon break. The ex-Londoner then extended their lead – despite the attentions of Hull fullback Jamie Shaul.

Leon Pryce then pulled back a controversial try but little did it matter as Shaun Lunt crashed over following a Talanoa error just before the break to give Rovers an 18-6 interval lead.

With the home side struggling to tick the score-board, Rovers three-quarter Josh Mantellato kicked the only points of the second half following a penalty.

Hull clearly lacking confidence in possession were left to rue their missed opportunities as they lacked any sort of cutting edge. Each shift was straightforward to repel and for the majority predictable.

It didn’t complement what was a good go-forward. The hosts made metres for fun, but froze close to the line. Fragile, and really concerning.

Although points were limited after the break, the Robins continued to shut out a Hull side lacking confidence in possession and any sort of cutting edge.
