City of Hull hang on to record narrow victory

Hull FC's Connor Bower scored a hat-trick for City of Hull.

City of Hull Academy got back to winning ways with a nervy 26-22 victory over Salford at YPI, having at one stage looked set for an emphatic win.

The hosts were dominant early on and built up a commanding lead, before the Red Devils hit back late on.

Connor Bower showed his Hull FC reserve experience notching up an impressive hat-trick of tries, whilst remaining defensively solid throughout. Elsewhere Liam Harris once again was the star of the show, scoring two tries and having a key hand in several others. The half back is a class above this level, with his presence too much for Salford to cope with.

After a shaky start City of Hull quickly built up their ascendency. They played quicker, more direct and got on the front foot. Harris fortunately scored the games first try before Salford levelled, but the hosts then ran away with it.

Bower stormed over before Harris added a superb individual second stretching out for the line. Potent centre Bower then rounded off an impressive first half performance with a second try, before two Harris conversions built up a 20-6 half time lead.

Bower got his hat-trick soon after the break collecting a Harris kick, as Salford responded through Lewis Fairhurst. Some stern City of Hull defence then kept Salford out, but the visitors pilled on the pressure and scored twice through Elliot Caine to come within four points.

A 40/20 then gave the away side further field position but resolute City of Hull defence ensured what turned out to be a closely fought win.
